Grand environmental visions need new ways of thinking

Grand visions can grab you like a vice. The vision catches us, and even if we don’t know these places intimately, we work hard to see them protected.

For environmentalists it might be getting the cattle out of the Alps, stopping dams in south-west Tasmania or protecting red gums along the Murray.

On this journey, however, there are casualties, and they are usually local people.

Land and Biodiversity White Paper released

The Victoria Naturally Alliance has welcomed the release of the Victorian Government’s 50-year vision to reverse the state’s loss of nature and to reconnect the landscape, but warned it would take serious investment to make this vision a reality.

Our woodland birds in trouble

A 15-year study has revealed dramatic crashes in bird numbers across northern and central Victoria.

The study shows that about two-thirds of bird species have declined dramatically, including the Laughing Kookaburra, Red Wattlebird and Red-capped Robin.
